Described by Michael Ondaatje as “a crazy ambidextrous delight”, Shehan Karunatilaka’s prize-winning novel Chinaman is a book about cricket, a mystery story, a wildly inventive comedy, and a tale of obsession and slow bowling. It also tells a powerful and eccentric story about modern-day Sri Lanka, a country with a recent history of tragic divisions, but comically united in a love for its most cherished sport.


Come and hear Shehan Karunatilaka talk to Douglas Kerr about Chinaman, described in the Sunday Times as “the first genuine contender for the title of Great Sri Lankan novel”, and the only work of fiction that comes with instructions on how to bowl a Floater.
